The curves necessary to get round the corners throw a lot of ground space out of use. However, I would not go so far just at present as to advise the adoption of four-wheeled stock.

However, to enable me to design the yards, you might let me know the minimum radius I should allow for curves on private sidings, which will be served by the shunting engines which you sent out for use on the reclamation of Kowloon Station Yard. I propose to use 1 in 6 crossings only in large station yards where a shunting engine can always be at hand, as I do not think the large main line engines will be able to take this crossing easily with the small radius of curvature.
10. I also send an advance summary of the Revised Estimate for the Line with an explanatory memo on same.
11. The Estimate, amounting to $7,947,530, is subject to correction as all the details have not been checked as yet, and there may be some errors in calculation, which, however, I do not think will amount to much.
This revised estimate is a high one, but with the departmental system of Railway construction, full benefit can be taken of everything tending to make a saving.
